Take the Pledge Against Sexual Assault With “It’s On Us”

By: Grayson Hennelly on Mar 29, 2019 in ASI Student Government

During the first week of spring quarter, ASI Student Government and Safer will team up to continue their support against sexual assault through the “It’s On Us” movement. Started by the Obama administration in 2014, this campaign aims to strengthen the conversation and education of sexual assault by getting students, community leaders, organizations, and companies to stand up together to take the pledge — a promise to yourself and others to fight against sexual assault.

To bring awareness to Cal Poly’s campus, there will be daily activities to get students involved. Throughout the whole week, the “P” will be painted teal in honor of It’s On Us, along with teal banners leading up to the campus grounds. Students can enter themselves into a raffle by posting a picture with the It’s On Us pledge board on Dexter Lawn and in the University Union Plaza and hashtagging #ItsOnUsCalPoly for a chance to win a Hydro Flask and a feature on the @CalPolyASI Instagram.

Both clubs and organizations alike have been getting involved by encouraging each one of their members to take the It’s On Us pledge. Sororities and fraternities will also be competing to see who can show the most support for this movement by hashtagging #ItsOnUsCPGreek and #ItsOnUsCalPoly.

To educate students on the importance of standing up against sexual assault, Student Government and Safer have organized activities and events throughout the week, including:

Tuesday, April 2:

Dexter Lawn, 2:30 to 4:30 p.m.: Take the pledge to receive an It’s On Us T-shirt and free french fries to show support for the cause. After taking the pledge, students can write their name on the It’s On Us board and are encouraged to design their own shirt for the Clothesline Project. Student Government will also be giving away mini flashlights to help students stay safe at night.

Wednesday, April 3:

UU Plaza, 2:30 to 4:30 p.m.: Student Government will be passing out Guayakí Yerba Mate, free It’s On Us T-shirts to those who take the pledge, and teal nail polish to encourage students to paint one of their nails as a means to spread awareness. Safer will be promoting how men can get involved through the Polished Man Project.

Thursday, April 4:

UU Plaza, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.: Student Government will be passing out Guayakí Yerba Mate, free It’s On Us T-shirts to those who take the pledge, and encouraging students to sign the It’s On Us board with chalk. They will also be passing out pocket alarms to help students stay safe at night.
