“This was a monumental step for ASI to approve an election code that moves towards creating a welcoming environment for students to run for office. I believe that ASI didn’t take baby steps, but took a leap in their vision towards creating a more diverse and inclusive campus and organization.” —Jana Colombini, ASI President

On Wednesday, January 11, 2017, the Associated Students, Inc. (ASI) Board of Directors voted on recommendations presented by the ASI Recruitment and Development Committee for updates and additions to the 2017–18 ASI Election Code. These recommendations were requested by the committee to better serve the needs of today’s students and incorporate emerging trends.

A thorough review of the ASI Election Code document by the ASI Recruitment and Development Committee occurred during fall quarter. Student budgets were heavily considered when making recommendations to the ASI Board of Directors for the ASI Election Code which resulted in the implementation of a Presidential campaign spending limit of $2,000 and elimination of candidate filing fees.

"Ultimately the committee felt adding a spending limit was a progressive step in the right direction of having an inclusive ASI Student Government," states Lexi Bonestroo, ASI Recruitment and Development Chair. "The committee wanted to remove the barrier of a filing fee for student that might not file just because they can't afford the fee."

The ASI Election Code has not incorporated a spending limit previously. Removal of the filing fee and addition of the spending limit was created to improve accessibility for students with interests in running for office.

"I am excited to see how student respond to these changes and the effect it has on the ASI election," says Bonestroo.

The 2017–2018 ASI Election Code is effective immediately. Filing for candidacy for the 2017–2018 ASI elections begins on February 6, 2017 at 8 a.m. and ends on February 24, 2017 at 4 p.m. For more information on the ASI Elections, contact Lexie Bonestroo at 805-756-1291 or asistudentgovernment@calpoly.edu.
