Cal Poly students — you can Flex Your Right to vote today! ASI Student Government can help you register to vote before the November midterm election deadline on Oct. 22.

What is Flex Your Right?

Flex Your Right is an initiative created and supported by Student Government to increase student voter registration on Cal Poly’s campus.

How can I register before Oct. 22?

  • Visit bit.ly/CPVotes and fill out the simple online form.
  • Fill out a form in the Student Government office on the second floor of the Julian A. McPhee University Union.

Why is it important to register this year?

Kabir Shahi, secretary of student rights on the ASI Executive Cabinet, explains the impact of Student Government’s initiative: “We have the unique opportunity and duty to ensure that our local politics stay as pro-student as possible. Cal Poly students make up approximately 40 percent of the City of San Luis Obispo’s population.

In local elections this year, the mayor of San Luis Obispo’s seat and many city council positions are open. Many other statewide initiatives will directly impact Cal Poly students. Year after year, we have proven to have a powerful voice with immense influence in local issues, allowing our students to continue to have a safe, eventful, and meaningful experience at Cal Poly,” Shahi said.

Where can I learn more about the candidates?

Student Government is hosting a candidate mixer and mayoral debate on Thursday, Oct. 18 from 11 a.m. to noon in University Union Room 220. Come meet your city council and mayoral candidates and hear them speak on issues affecting Cal Poly students. Mustang News will livestream the event for those unable to attend.

“Student Government is very focused on creating a culture of civic engagement on Cal Poly’s campus,” ASI President Jasmin Fashami said. “Beyond registration, we must educate our campus and engage with local officials regarding student-focused issues in order to empower our voices and initiate meaningful change.”

Additional information on candidates and measures can be found in the Ballot Booklets on the county clerk-recorder website.

Will Cal Poly register the most students?

As part of a statewide competition led by the secretary of state, Cal Poly is competing with other universities in the ballot bowl to register the most students. With the collective effort of all students, Cal Poly has the opportunity to be recognized at the state level, and you can help by registering today at bit.ly/CPVotes!
