ASI Student Staff Spotlight: Meet Christian River Vian

By: Jenna Brown on Nov 15, 2017 in ASI Staff Spotlights

Name: Christian River Vian
Position: ASI Intramural Sports Official
Major: Chemistry
Minor: Physics and Philosophy
School year: 4th
Hometown: Redwood City, CA

1) What makes you happy?
In as few words as possible, family, good friends, good music, and beautiful places.

2) What's something most people don't know about you?
I have been to the beach where they shot the fight scene on the Wookie homeworld (Kashyyyk, for my fellow nerds) in Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith. It's in Thailand if you were curious.

3) Share your favorite memory working for ASI.
Would have to say officiating the WOW dodgeball tournament this past year. It was awesome getting to meet officials from other sports and some of the club sport players who also came out to help. As a 4th year, getting to see wowies just stoked to be at Cal Poly reminded me why I chose this beautiful school.

4) If you could create a slogan for your life, what would it be?
For better or for worse, appreciate every moment for all that it is because it’s about to change.

5) What's the best place you've traveled to and why?
Venice, Italy. The culture is palpable in every corner of the city. In addition to it being an incredibly gorgeous city in every way possible, it is also the most unique place I have ever been.

6) Where's your favorite spot in SLO?
The physics study lounge on the 6th floor of Baker. Views from the 6… but actually it has some of the most beautiful views of the majority of campus. It is also a great collaboration and study space.

7) What's one thing you can't leave home without?
Deodorant? Duh…

8) What's on your bucket list?
So many things… but with recent developments in genetics and medicine, I think it'd be really cool to not die of “old age" (this is not a sarcastic answer, it is becoming physically possible to halt the aging process. See CGP Grey’s “Why Die?” if you're curious about that answer).

9) What do you hope to achieve after you graduate?
I would like to go on to grad school to pursue a PhD in theory and computational simulation of solid state materials. At some point, I hope to work as a scientific policy adviser for a future administration. I hope that I could use what I’ve learned to help the general population look at science and scientists with a positive lens.

10) What advice would you give to students interested in working for ASI?
Be outgoing and always willing to help out. ASI will become like a family to you. Families are more functional and happier when they support one another. My advice would be to adopt this family mentality as soon as you can. It will make work more fun and efficient for everyone.
