On Wednesday, Oct. 25, the ASI Board of Directors voted to approve the creation of the ASI Ad Hoc Committee on Diversity and Inclusion. The committee will be tasked with researching and recommending the best methods of supporting diversity and inclusion within ASI Student Government to better serve Cal Poly students.

“ASI Student Government is representative of campus as a whole. To hold us to that standard of ensuring we truly are representing all students is important,” Board of Directors member Tim Wetzel said.

The group will research the work of other universities and conduct discussions with campus partners to evaluate best practices for implementation. They will gather feedback and present their findings to the board on April 18, 2018, where they will propose recommendations with timelines for execution.

Two board members will be appointed to the chair and vice chair positions. The committee will consist of six board members including one representative from each college, one member of the University Union Advisory Board, and one member of the ASI Executive Cabinet. The ASI executive director or designee and Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs – Diversity and Inclusion Jamie Patton will serve as non-voting representatives on the committee.

Progress updates will be shared at all regularly scheduled board meetings. If you’d like to learn more, please attend an upcoming board meeting. Meetings are held every other Wednesday at 5:10 p.m. in UU 220. Visit the board calendar for the updated meeting schedule.
