Stand Against Sexual Assault With "It's On Us”

By: Jenna Brown on Apr 02, 2018 in ASI Student Government

1 in 5 women and 1 in 16 men are sexually assaulted in college according to NotAlone.gov. “It's On Us” is a national movement started by former President Barack Obama and the White House Council on Women and Girls in 2014 to raise awareness and fight against sexual assault on college campuses.

ASI Student Government and Safer are teaming up to bring It's On Us to Cal Poly from April 2 to 5 to support victims of sexual assault and prevent future occurrences. The week aims to provide students with the tools and information to intervene in situations where consent has not been given, and to create a holistic environment in which sexual assault is unacceptable and survivors are supported.

“This event is so important to Cal Poly’s campus to give a voice to victims of sexual assault,” Secretary of Health and Wellbeing on the ASI Executive Cabinet Haley Wintsch said. “Unfortunately, it is an issue that often goes unreported and many victims of sexual assault and violence feel unsupported in their journey. It’s On Us is a week to bring awareness to sexual assault and to provide resources to prevent sexual assault and help people suffering from its consequences.”

Highlights from the week’s activities are as follows:

Monday, April 2: Create

Dexter Lawn, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.: Design a T-shirt and proudly display your creation as a symbol of acknowledgement and awareness as part of the Clothesline Project.

Tuesday, April 3: Identify

Mustang Way, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.: Sign the It’s On Us pledge to receive a free T-shirt for Teal Out Tuesday to identify yourself as an ally to victims of sexual assault and violence. Remember to practice consent with free fries. With F.R.I.E.S., consent is: freely given, reversible, informed, enthusiastic, and specific.

Wednesday, April 4: Recognize

Phillips Hall, 6 p.m.: Cal Poly's improv comedy team Smile and Nod will be performing Expect Respect, a comedy show about sexual assault, consent, and healthy relationships.

Thursday, April 5: Intervene

Mustang Way, 10 a.m. to noon: Learn about resources and organizations that focus on healthy relationships including Safer, PULSE, ASI, and more.
